GS alumni participated in a professional panel on careers in law at the Dinner & Discussion event for GS students held on Monday, January 30.

Michael D. Olmos ’00GS co-directed the film Filly Brown, an official selection at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Bonnie Lee Black ’79 recently received three prestigious awards from Gourmand International for her book How to Cook a Crocodile: A Memoir with Recipes.

Dean Peter J. Awn hosted the GS Annual Fund Holiday Reception for leadership alumni, friends of the School, and recent alumni, with more than 130 alumni and friends attending the reception at Landmarc in the Time Warner Center.

In a panel hosted by the Columbia Journalism School, held before a special screening of Johnny Depp's upcoming film The Rum Diary, Depp recalled his interactions with GS alumnus Hunter S. Thompson.

Beatrice Ellerstein attended GS in 1926 and recently celebrated her 104th birthday at Merwick Care and Rehabilitation Center in Plainsboro. She once served as first lady Eleanor Roosevelt’s personal driver and continues to amaze her friends by blazing through crossword puzzles.

The School of General Studies welcomed a new class to campus this fall with a week of Orientation activities. 

Directed by Larysa Kondracki ’01, The Whistleblower is based on a true story about a female police officer from Nebraska who served as a peacekeeper in postwar Bosnia and exposed the complicity of local police, UN peacekeepers, and employees of the American private security firm DynCorp in sex trafficking.

Beginning this fall, students interested in a rigorous, international college experience will have an opportunity to study in both France and the United States while earning two bachelor’s degrees through the new Dual BA Program between the French university Sciences Po and Columbia University.

More than 160 GS alumni and guests gathered on campus from June 3 through 5, 2011 to celebrate Alumni Reunion Weekend and Dean’s Day alongside alumni from Columbia College, Columbia Engineering, and Barnard College. 

On June 8, 2011, the 92nd Street SE corner at Columbus Avenue will be renamed PS 84 Sidney Morison Way in honor of GS alumnus Sidney H. Morison ’63.

Three years ago, the New York City Ballet dancer and owner of fitness company Ballet Beautiful Helen Bowers ’08GS got a chance to train Natalie Portman for her role in the film Black Swan. At 26, Bowers came to Columbia University and graduated early with a degree in English literature.
