The program, funded through a grant from University President Lee C. Bollinger, provides the cost of the program fee for participation in one of the Columbia global programs in addition to a stipend for airfare and living expenses. More than 100 students applied for awards this year.
“I am thrilled to be selected as a member for the inaugural cohort of the Presidential Global Fellowship,” Vorselen said. “I am happy the selections committee recognizes the value of GS students, and appreciates the benefits of incorporating nontraditional students into a new and ambitious program. I look forward to the opportunities the fellowship will give me to have a tangible and direct impact on the University.”
Vorselen enrolled in GS following a deployment in Afghanistan where he served as a computer specialist with the U.S. Marine Corps. He will be attending the Summer Ecosystem Experience for Undergraduates (SEE-U) in Brazil this summer, where he will research energy policy, sustainable development, and the interconnectedness of global resources and economies from an ecological perspective.
