GS Orientation Week Brings Families Into the Columbia Experience
From alumni panels to campus tours, families experienced a day designed to connect them with the people and resources that will support their students’ GS journeys.
As more than 700 new Columbia GS students prepared to embark their Columbia journeys, their families started their own journeys as well and were welcomed with a day of orientation activities designed especially for them.
The morning began with the Convocation Ceremony where families heard words of inspiration from Columbia and GS leaders, including Dean Lisa Rosen-Metsch ’90GS; Columbia University Acting President Claire Shipman ’86CC, ’94SIPA; and Elle Littlefield ‘12GS, a member of the Columbia Alumni Association (CAA) Board of Directors. Speakers shared reflections on the unique GS journey, emphasizing the distinct nontraditional path GS students take to Columbia, and offered inspiration and insight into the opportunities ahead.
Following the ceremony, parents and family members started their own orientation programming, which was hosted by the GS Office of Development and Alumni Relations. Guests were introduced to the Columbia community and the resources available to support their students’ transition to the University.
Dean Rosen-Metsch offered a special welcome and guests were treated to an interactive lecture from GS Dean of Academic Affairs Caroline Marvin titled “Curiosity and Learning at Columbia.” Families also participated in a resource session led by GS Dean of Students Marlyn Delva ‘98BC, ‘99TC, ‘13TC and members of the GS advising team, who shared guidance on academics, registration, and student life.
The afternoon concluded with a panel of current GS students and alumni, who reflected on their Columbia journeys and offered practical advice for families of new GS students. A guided walking tour of the Morningside Heights campus rounded out the day, giving guests a first-hand view of their students’ new home.
