The Medal, first awarded in 1933, is the highest honor the University bestows on its alumni, in recognition of distinguished service of ten years or more to the University.

Lawrence is a dedicated alumni leader at both of his Columbia alma maters and at the University as a whole. He is co-chair of both the Columbia Business School Entrepreneurship Program Advisory Committee and the Undergraduate Campaign Council, an alumni volunteer group focused on the $865 million undergraduate portion of Columbia’s current $4 billion capital campaign. He was also co-chair of the 2009 GS Reunion Committee.

Lawrence was also recently appointed to the board of the Columbia Investment Management Company, which oversees the management of Columbia's endowment funds.
