First Look: Inside 99 Claremont, Columbia's New Home for GS Students

As students begin moving in for the fall semester, Columbia School of General Studies' new residential building has officially welcomed its first residents.

Located at the corner of Claremont Avenue and West 122nd Street, 99 Claremont is the first residential building designed and dedicated for GS students. Behind its restored historic façade, the building features contemporary living, study, and community spaces tailored to the needs of nontraditional students.

New photos offer a first look inside the building's light-filled common spaces, including study areas, a communal chef's kitchen, and fitness center, plus thoughtfully designed gathering spaces on every residential floor and a rooftop terrace overlooking the Hudson River and surrounding neighborhood. Together, these spaces are designed to foster meaningful connections and a strong sense of belonging among GS students, reflecting the close-knit community that has long defined the School.

99 Claremont represents more than an investment in the GS student experience; it underscores the School's longstanding commitment to supporting nontraditional students both inside and outside the classroom. When the project was announced in March, Dean Lisa Rosen-Metsch said: "This milestone reflects our commitment to meeting one of the most significant needs within our student population: accessible, community-centered housing designed specifically for nontraditional undergraduate students." She continued: "Its close proximity to Morningside campus will reduce commute times and increase opportunities for students to deepen their engagement with one another, essential for the community building that is a hallmark of the GS experience.”

With students moving in throughout the month, 99 Claremont officially opens a new chapter for GS as the School's first dedicated residential building.
