Faith Grady, GS Student Council (GSSC) Senior Class President for the 2023-2024 academic year, took the stage following Dean Rosen-Metsch’s remarks, acknowledging that “the journey that has brought you to this moment has surely been marked by late nights of studying, moments of self-discovery, and a substantial amount of resilience.” She continued, honoring students’ accomplishments that paved the road to graduation.
“Tonight we gather not only to celebrate your academic achievements, but also the unwavering determination and spirit that comes with being a graduate of the School of General Studies.... Here’s to the endless possibilities that lie ahead, and to our 2024 graduates.”
Following Grady’s remarks, Serengeti Timungwa ’22GS, former GSSC president and current co-chair of the General Studies Alumni Association (GSAA) Programming Committee, expounded upon the connections shared amongst graduates, encouraging them to remain connected to the School and to each other.
“I believe our dedication to building community isn’t accidental—it’s a core trait of being a GSer and what led us all to being at GS in the first place. It’s also what ensured our success here. You didn’t reach this milestone alone,” she said. “Just hold onto the sense of community, even as you graduate. You’ll quickly find that your connection to GS and to Columbia is lifelong.”
Next, Dean of Students Marlyn Delva echoed the sentiments expressed throughout the evening before calling each graduate in attendance to the stage by name to receive their alumni pin.
“It is truly a privilege to be here and to congratulate you on this amazing achievement…. Know that you have a community here that you can always visit—attend programs, join committees, and participate as our alumni. And we really hope that you do…. We honor all of you in your achievements and we celebrate your success. We encourage you to stay connected with each other and with us,” Delva said.
