GS Dean Peter J. Awn welcomed guests and panelists to this lively event. GS alumnae panelists included Danielle Greenberg ’75GS, Director of Nutrition and Scientific Affairs at PepsiCo, NYU Professor Michele Shedlin ’68GS, ’75 ’82GSAS, ’82PH, Medical Anthropologist in Reproductive Health and HIV Research, and Ophthalmologist Rochelle Peck ’76PBPM.
The moderator and panelists discussed the challenges and rewards of being a woman and a scientist from work-life balance to sexual discrimination. The intergenerational panel brought a variety of experience and perspectives to the discussion. Striking the right work-life balance seemed to be the most difficult and persistent challenge for women working in the sciences. In particular, Shedlin spoke about the difficulties she experienced raising her children in a field where one must must outperform male counterparts in order to achieve an equal measure of recognition.
The evening concluded with a reception, where the panelists and attendees continued the conversation.
