The GS Development and Alumni Relations team recently hosted a virtual panel discussion with GS alumni who work as recruitment and hiring managers. Alumni in Conversation: Recruiting and Hiring Managers featured panelists Michelle Crupi '19GS '20SW, Senior Recruitment Consultant at Michael Page; Tahlia dos Santos '17GS, Director, Talent Strategy at Wunderkind; Crissy McConnell '14GS, Senior Tech Recruiter at Guild Education; and Amna Pervez '15GS, Senior Human Resources Business Partner at Handshake.

Moderated by Ashley Kuitunen, GS Assistant Director of Alumni Relations, the panelists shared three tips to both students actively searching for jobs and those interested in becoming recruiters or hiring managers themselves.

Good Recruiters Build Relationships

All the panelists stressed the importance of a positive relationship between recruiter and potential employee. Tahlia dos Santos '17GS shared, “Really good recruiters, you make friends with them, you build a relationship with them. They’re following up with you, they’re ensuring that you are getting everything that you need in that recruiting process.” When you walk into an interview, you should feel confident that your recruiter has prepared you to succeed.

Find Your Fit

When we go shopping, rather than squeezing into a shirt or shoe, we look for one that fits. The same can be said for job hunting. Amna Pervez '15GS emphasized, “During your interview process, you have to make sure you’re asking the right questions so that you land in a place that is a good fit, not just in terms of the job you want to do, but in terms of the culture, as well.” Don’t be afraid to ask about the things that are important for you, whether it be salary expectations, maternity leave, or employee benefits.

Use Your Network

The power of networking can never be underestimated, especially the Columbia network. The people you know and the conversations you have are really going to help propel your career. Pervez '15GS also advised, “Don’t forget to lean on your peers and your network internally as well, because you just never know where that might lead you.”

Whether you’re navigating the job market or want to help others in their job search as a recruiter or hiring manager, these three tips will help you. By building positive relationships, looking for a role that fits you, and using your network, you are sure to find success in your career.
