Dr. James Mabry was inaugurated as Middlesex Community College’s fourth president on Thursday, October 15. Mabry graduated from GS in 1981, after which he went on to the London School of Economics for a Master of Science degree and then returned to Columbia for a PhD in U.S. history.

GS student Carrie Walsh grew up on the small island of Jersey, just off the coast of France. Though she had always envisioned herself becoming a doctor, it was at 13 that her passion for ballet emerged. Thirteen is a late age to begin dancing, but that didn’t deter Walsh from making the decision to pursue dancing professionally, and only a few years later she began to dance at the Royal Ballet School of London.
GS student C. Craig Patterson grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana, immersed in storytelling. The early presence and importance of storytelling in his life eventually led him to his pursuits in filmmaking, both in and outside of the Columbia classroom.

GS student-veteran Nate Smith was selected as a 2015 Tillman Scholar by the Pat Tillman Foundation, which awards annual scholarships to students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree. Smith enlisted in the Marines after the 9/11 attacks and served with the U.S. Marine Corps for nine years.
Six GS students—out of an overall group of eight students from Columbia University—were recently selected to receive summer 2015 scholarships from the Gilman International Scholarship Program, which "aims to encourage students interested in non-traditional study abroad destinations by providing financial support."
The School of General Studies celebrated the Class of 2015 at the GS Class Day ceremony on Monday, May 18. More than 1,500 guests joined faculty and administrators in recognizing the accomplishments of the 447 members of the graduating class, 69 of whom are U.S. military veterans, more veteran graduates than any other Ivy League undergraduate institution.
The graduates of the Postbac Premed Program celebrated Class Day on May 15 in Low Memorial Library. Faculty, administrators, fellow students, friends, and family honored the 126 graduates for completing this important step on their journey to medical school and beyond.
