The graduates of the Columbia Postbac Premed Program celebrated Class Day on May 13 in Low Memorial Library. Faculty, administrators, fellow students, friends, and family honored the 133 graduates for completing this important step on their journey to medical school and beyond.

The School of General Studies celebrated the Class of 2016 at the GS Class Day ceremony on Monday, May 16. More than 1,800 guests joined faculty and administrators in recognizing the accomplishments of the 547 members of the graduating class, 112 of whom are international students, and 78 of whom are U.S. military veterans, the most of any Ivy League university.

After several influential experiences with Columbia professors as a GS student, Valerie Fendt's sights are now set on a PhD with a view to teaching college-level courses within prisons. 

David Norman, a Harlem native and former heroin addict, graduated from the Columbia University School of General Studies yesterday with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. At 67 years old, he is the oldest graduate to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University this year.

Edna Simbi, a Kenyan refugee and mother of two who escaped to the US in 2010, will graduate cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in political science from the Columbia University School of General Studies on Monday, May 16.

Ivy League baseball champion Joey Falcone knows firsthand how it feels to succeed thanks to hard work. At 17 years old, after graduating from Bolton High School in Alexandria, Louisiana, he enlisted in the military, believing it was the best option for his future. He had lost interest in academics, and though he loved playing baseball as the school’s right fielder, had not distinguished himself enough to gain the attention of any college teams.

Luca Springer ’16, a student in the Dual BA Program Between Columbia University and Sciences Po, has been selected as a 2016 Rhodes Scholar. He is one of only 89 recipients of this prestigious award worldwide, and will pursue a Master of Public Policy degree at Oxford University this fall.

On Tuesday, November 10, students, alumni, and faculty gathered in Low Memorial Library to celebrate scholarship recipients at the School of General Studies. These scholarships are made possible by generous alumni and donors, many of whom were present to share dinner with their respective scholarship recipients.

Dr. James Mabry was inaugurated as Middlesex Community College’s fourth president on Thursday, October 15. Mabry graduated from GS in 1981, after which he went on to the London School of Economics for a Master of Science degree and then returned to Columbia for a PhD in U.S. history.
