The New York Times recently published two pieces singing the benefits of music education: Long-Term Benefits of Music Lessons and Is Music the Key to Success?. From his own life-long study of music, guitarist and composer Sebastian Clegg ’13 can attest to its power first hand.
As a new teacher at Mott Hall Charter School in the Bronx, Sebastian Clegg is working hard to get his fledgling music program for sixth and seventh graders the resources it needs to succeed. Through a campaign fueled by DonorsChoose.org, Clegg, who graduated in May, is hoping to raise funds to purchase instruments, books, and other materials to support his students’ tenacity, desire, and drive to study music.
"The school is in its second year, and as of yet, has no musical instruments to offer its students," wrote Clegg in an email to friends and family announcing the campaign.
"Most students have shown a true interest and love for music, but have some apprehension because they are unsure of what true opportunities they will receive due to our lack of resources."
As the DonorsChoose.org campaign page testifies, the students are fearful that "their love, their faith will only meet the disappointment of not being able to commit to an instrument."
Mott Hall Charter School is in one of the poorest neighborhoods in the country. Clegg believes that if he is able to develop a deep interest in music among his students, he may be able to motivate these young people toward a promising and successful future.
