GS Welcomes New Dean of Students

The School of General Studies is pleased to introduce our new Dean of Students, Marlyn Delva, EdD.

September 17, 2019

Dean Delva was selected after an extensive national search, and most recently served as an associate dean of student affairs and dean of students at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, overseeing student services and educational programs designed to enhance the student experience. She has earned a national reputation for her dedication to ensuring the well-being of the students she serves.

“I am thrilled to be joining the School of General Studies. I made a commitment, when I began my career in higher education, to join institutions that believe in transforming education with a profound interest in the overall student experience. It is with immense pride that I leave one school dedicated to this mission and am now joining GS—a school that not only lives this mission but is positioning itself as a leader in transformative, nontraditional undergraduate education. I could not be more ecstatic to join the School at this pivotal moment and be a part of the next generation of the GS student experience,” Dean Delva said.

Dean Delva has received numerous honors and accolades for her accomplishments, teaching, and leadership including most recently being awarded the 2019 Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health Student Services Excellence Award for her innovative and forward-thinking practices and extraordinary dedication in working with students.

“Having worked with Dean Delva at Mailman, I am certain that she will bring that same energy, creativity, imagination, and dedication to GS,” said Lisa Rosen-Metsch, Dean of the School of General Studies.

Dean Delva also serves as an assistant professor of epidemiology and sociomedical sciences whose research explores the areas of health disparities, specifically issues of access to health services and the impact of societal structures as these relate to populations of Caribbean descent.
