GS Veteran Peer Mentor Program

Student veterans are invited to apply to be GS Veteran Peer Mentor for the 2025-26 academic year. This peer mentor program is designed to help incoming student veterans transition into academic life at General Studies as well as offer support to all GS student veterans.

Each semester, new student veterans arrive at Columbia in the pursuit of higher education and transition resources. This peer-to-peer mentoring program provides social support to incoming student veterans and is particularly helpful in fostering the unique dynamic that exists between students with shared experiences. As a Veteran Peer Mentor you will have the opportunity to assist student veterans as they adjust to Columbia, by providing general advice, assistance, support, and personal transition experience.  As well as providing direct support to incoming student veterans, Veteran Peer Mentors will also be a source of support for GS student veterans in any phase of their enrollment offering guidance and perspective when needed to the entire student veteran population.

Responsibilities Include: 

  • Maintaining regular contact with your mentees during their first semester.
  • Helping mentees understand what they can expect during their time at Columbia by providing experiential and personal support.
  • Assisting mentees with understanding student resources and services available at the university.
  • Assisting with social integration by encouraging mentees to participate in extra-curricular activities such as joining a club, attending GS & university wide events, sports, etc.
  • Attending Mentor Mentee Social(s) and monthly peer mentor staff meetings.
  • Host regularly scheduled drop-in hours during the Fall and Spring semesters.

Time Commitment 

  • Veteran Mentor Training (Tentative scheduled for Wednesday May 7, 2025 )
  • Monthly Veteran Mentor Meetings beginning Fall 2025 (Usually schedule on Friday afternoons)
  • Regularly scheduled drop-in hours during the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026  semesters (2-4 hours weekly)
  • Attend Veteran Meet & Greet & Welcome Breakfast during Orientation Week ( Week of August 25 & January 12 )

Requirements:

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Successfully completed one full semester
  • Plans to enroll for both Fall 2025 and Spring 2026
  • General knowledge of university departments and services 
  • Must attend a half-day Veteran Mentoring training session, tentatively scheduled for Wednesday May 7, 2025.
  • Summer availability to begin mentor/mentee outreach (virtual) primarily by email or phone
