"While I was in the armed forces, I was fortunate enough to be able to work alongside amazing professionals on a daily basis," Smith noted. "The lifelong fellowship that the Pat Tillman Foundation has extended to me is an amazing opportunity to work with like-minded individuals who are aspiring to make an impact on the world."

At GS, he is majoring in political science and international relations, and has the long-term goal of continuing to serve in the nonprofit sector.

Nate Smith is one of four 2015 Columbia University Tillman Scholars, and the third GS student to receive the scholarship, joining Michael McDonald '12 and GS student Bill Roberts. GS alum Jason Everman '14, who is currently earning his Master's degree in military history at Norwich University, was also selected as a 2015 Tillman Scholar.

The Tillman Military Scholars program supports veterans from all branches of the military by providing scholarships that cover educational costs, as well as other needs like housing and child care. The program also focuses on guiding veterans to serve and lead in their local communities, and supports their transition to civilian life. Columbia University is one of 18 universities serving as Tillman Military Scholar University Partners.
