GS Student a 2022 Fulbright Recipient

Jose Esquer ’21GS was awarded a Fulbright Grant and will travel to Colombia to participate in the English Teaching Assistantship Program.

Jose Esquer ’21GS, was awarded a Fulbright Grant and will travel to Colombia to participate in the English Teaching Assistantship Program in 2023. Esquer was one of 16 Columbia students and alumni from various schools to be selected for the prestigious award in 2022-2023. 

Originally from Escondido, California, Esquer came to Columbia after studying at Occidental College. At GS, he pursued a major in human rights. In 2017 he also participated in the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, which provides funding for students to study or intern abroad and gain valuable skills for work in national security and economic development. 

About Fulbright 

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides college students with the funded opportunity to complete one year of academic research, degree study, or English teaching in over 140 countries around the world. 

Fulbright Grants for Study and Research Abroad provide for one year of academic study or research abroad. Projects may include university coursework, independent library, lab, or field research, classes in a music conservatory or art school, special projects in the social or life sciences, or a combination. Some countries support enrollment in graduate degree programs.

Fulbright Grants for English Teaching Assistantships (ETA) provide funding and placements for one year in primary, secondary schools or universities where grantees contribute to English-language instruction. ETA grants are offered in over 60 countries around the world. Recipients are expected to propose small research projects or community engagement activities beyond their teaching responsibilities.
