GS Honors Veterans for Their Service

November 10, 2014

In honor of Veterans Day, the School of General Studies celebrates the service of U.S. military veterans in a variety of events leading up to and on Veterans Day. While neither the School nor the University can thank our servicemen and women enough, below are a few of the ways that GS is commemorating Veterans Day:

  • On November 6, Vice Dean Curtis Rodgers visited wounded warriors and staff at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center where he presented an information session about the college application process.  The presentation, which was focused on general advice and guidelines on transitioning into institutions of higher education, follows a presentation given previously at Camp Pendelton for the Wounded Warrior Battalion-West

  • On November 7, the School of General Studies sponsored a lunch for all GS students to celebrate and thank our student-veterans for their service at Henry's Restaurant at 2745 Broadway. More than 40 students attended and Dean Peter J. Awn, greeted and thanked all those in attendance for their support of veteran scholars.

  • On Veterans Day, November 11, more than 50 Columbia students, alumni and their families will ride on the GS float in the New York City Veterans Day Parade. This is the sixth straight year that GS has been a major sponsor of the Parade, which travels up Fifth Avenue from 26th St. to 56th St. The Parade, which is the largest in the nation and broadcast on a variety of television stations, is honoring the 200th anniversary of the writing of the "Star-Spangled Banner."

  • Also on Veterans Day, the School of General Studies will hold its annual Scholarship Celebration. In addition to celebrating GS's generous donors and student scholars, this year, the Celebration also commemorates the public launch of the campaign for veterans education, which aims to provide scholarships for veterans regardless of government-funded programs such as the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill® or the Yellow Ribbon Program.
