The New Student Orientation Program (NSOP) Social Events Coordinator will assist GS Student Life in the execution of GS-specific orientation events, and collaborate with partners to host other four-school events during Fall 2026 Orientation.

Position Description

The NSOP Student Chair will collaborate with committee members from CC, and SEAS to plan and implement joint, four-school events during Fall 2025 Orientation. The Coordinator will also assist GS Student Life in the planning and execution of GS-specific orientation initiatives, including implementing GS mandatory orientation programs, assisting with the management of orientation leaders during Orientation Week, staffing new student meet & greets, drafting orientation leader newsletters, assisting with summer orientation team meet ups (in-person & virtual), and copy editing the GS orientation schedule.

Time Commitment

  • Attend and participate fully in the overnight NSOP retreat, tentatively schedule for Wed. May 27 - Fri. May 29
  • Work a total of 24 hours per week in June and July as decided in collaboration with your supervisor between 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday - Thursday, and 9:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. on Fridays.
  • Must be available for Committee meetings at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays.
  • Attend all-committee and joint-meetings in June, July, and August on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. - Noon.
  • Work week must consist of a minimum of four hours on Wednesdays.
  • Work Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m.– 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week) in August and through Orientation Week (August 31 - September 6). Additional hours may be required during the week of orientation.
  • Assist with Crew Captain and Orientation Leader Training on Thurs., August 27  1-5 p.m. & Fri., August 28 9 -5 p.m.
  • Vacation for the committee is scheduled for the week of July 1. There are no exceptions to this timeline, please plan your summer vacation accordingly.

Qualifications

  • Must be a General Studies student enrolled for courses for Fall 2026 semester.
  • Must be detail-oriented, resourceful, and able to meet strict deadlines.
  • Event planning experience
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Knowledge of NYC (especially Manhattan) and the Columbia University campus and neighborhood preferred.
  • Must be in good disciplinary and academic standing as detailed on the GS website..

Benefits and Compensation

  • $5500 ($1000 paid in June; $4500 total paid out bi-weekly throughout the rest of the summer)
