Acclaimed Dancer and Educator Alicia Graf Mack ’03GS to Deliver Keynote Address at Columbia GS Class Day

Columbia University’s School of General Studies (GS) is proud to announce that Alicia Graf Mack '03GS, renowned dancer, scholar, educator, and Artistic Director designate of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, will deliver the keynote address at Columbia GS Class Day on Monday, May 19.

“Alicia’s extraordinary career and deep connection to the GS community embody the spirit of perseverance and excellence that define our graduates,” said Dean Lisa Rosen-Metsch. “We are honored to have her share her wisdom and experiences with the Class of 2025.”

Graf Mack, an esteemed member of the GS Board of Visitors, made history as the youngest and first Black Dean and Director of Juilliard Dance, a position she has held since 2018. A principal dancer with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and Complexions Contemporary Ballet, her career also includes guest performances with Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet, Beyoncé, John Legend, Andre 3000, and Alicia Keys.

In addition to her remarkable artistic achievements, Graf Mack is also a dedicated scholar. She graduated magna cum laude with honors in history from Columbia University and holds an MA in nonprofit management from Washington University in St. Louis. Recognized for her contributions to the arts, she was named an American Innovator of the Arts and Sciences by Smithsonian magazine in 2007 and is a recipient of the Columbia University Medal of Excellence.

A passionate dance educator, Graf Mack has taught at the University of Houston and Webster University, helping shape the next generation of dancers. She also co-produces and hosts “Moving Moments,” a podcast featuring candid conversations with groundbreaking artists in dance. She is married to Kirby Mack ‘01CC and has two fantastic kids.
