Opera and education have been two callings present in Fadel Friedlander-Fulkerson’s '14 life since she was a child in Louisville, Kentucky.
GS student Carrie Walsh grew up on the small island of Jersey, just off the coast of France. Though she had always envisioned herself becoming a doctor, it was at 13 that her passion for ballet emerged. Thirteen is a late age to begin dancing, but that didn’t deter Walsh from making the decision to pursue dancing professionally, and only a few years later she began to dance at the Royal Ballet School of London.
GS student C. Craig Patterson grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana, immersed in storytelling. The early presence and importance of storytelling in his life eventually led him to his pursuits in filmmaking, both in and outside of the Columbia classroom.

GS student-veteran Nate Smith was selected as a 2015 Tillman Scholar by the Pat Tillman Foundation, which awards annual scholarships to students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree. Smith enlisted in the Marines after the 9/11 attacks and served with the U.S. Marine Corps for nine years.
Six GS students—out of an overall group of eight students from Columbia University—were recently selected to receive summer 2015 scholarships from the Gilman International Scholarship Program, which "aims to encourage students interested in non-traditional study abroad destinations by providing financial support."
The School of General Studies celebrated the Class of 2015 at the GS Class Day ceremony on Monday, May 18. More than 1,500 guests joined faculty and administrators in recognizing the accomplishments of the 447 members of the graduating class, 69 of whom are U.S. military veterans, more veteran graduates than any other Ivy League undergraduate institution.
The graduates of the Postbac Premed Program celebrated Class Day on May 15 in Low Memorial Library. Faculty, administrators, fellow students, friends, and family honored the 126 graduates for completing this important step on their journey to medical school and beyond.

On Dec. 8, 1979, Lizzie Valverde was born in Tampa, Florida. One year later her sister Katy Olson was born; both adopted at birth. Thirty-three years later, and thousands of miles from where they began, Valverde met her long-lost sister, Olson, after sharing her adoption story on the first day of a Columbia University writing course.
For the first time since 1970 and since the return of NROTC to campus in 2012, a U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt., Patrick Poorbaugh, will be commissioned as a Marine Corps officer May 21 at 4:30 p.m. in Low Memorial Library Rotunda at Columbia University in the City of New York.
