GS Student Veterans Represent Columbia in Veterans Day Parade

November 12, 2021

For the last 13 years, GS student veterans, including the U.S. Military Veterans of Columbia University (Milvets), have been joined by friends and family as well as GS administration in the New York City Veterans Day Parade.

On Thursday, November 11, Dean of the School of General Studies, Lisa Rosen-Metsch, joined the Veterans Day celebration as the GS float rode 20 blocks down Fifth Avenue. Participants were excited to join the parade in-person for the first time since 2019, as the 2020 parade was held virtually.

Senior Assistant Dean of Student Veteran Initiatives, David Keefe, reflected on GS's participation in the parade, saying, “Every year, GS’ participation in the NYC Veterans Day Parade is a great showcase of the pride we have in supporting student veterans, and this year was exceptionally special given that after last year’s challenges our community came out in full force yesterday to wholeheartedly celebrate veterans and what it means to serve.”

U.S. Military Veterans at the School of General Studies

Originally founded in 1947 in large part to serve veterans returning from World War II, the Columbia University School of General Studies (GS) has been educating military veterans for more than 70 years. With more than 400 veteran students currently enrolled—more than three times the rest of the Ivy League combined—GS is the premier destination in higher education serving U.S. military veterans. They bring a wealth of life experience to the classroom, and contribute in a unique way to the diversity and cultural richness of the University.
