76 Students Inducted into the GS Honor Society
Earlier this month, the GS Honor Society inducted 76 students and recognized their academic achievements at a special ceremony.
Earlier this month, the School of General Studies Honor Society inducted 76 students who were joined by their peers, family, and GS faculty and staff to celebrate their academic achievement.
The GS Honor Society was established in 1997 to recognize the exceptional academic achievements of GS students.
Dean Lisa Rosen-Metsch welcomed guests, sharing her excitement and pride for the accomplishments of this year’s inductees, before introducing the featured speaker of the evening, Pavan C. Surapaneni ‘06GS.
Surapaneni shared his journey to GS, recounting his childhood in Maine, the troubles he encountered in his youth, and the perseverance that led him to succeed at GS. After graduating from GS in 2006, Surapaneni received his J.D. from Harvard. Today, he serves as a Director and Secretary of Saving Teens and a Director of the American Alpine Club. Surapaneni has been heavily involved in the GS community over the years. He currently serves as the Vice Chair on the GS Board of Visitors where he has been a member since 2011.
Dean of Academic Affairs, Caroline Marvin ‘16GSAS, praised the passion and dedication of this spring’s inductees, acknowledging their perseverance in both academic and personal affairs as well as their ability to foster growth within the GS community.
“The Honor Society was created nearly 25 years ago to celebrate the academic excellence of GS students. As you well know, there is nothing like the GS student body. You defy categorization, you blur boundaries, you chart your own paths.”
Dean Marvin emphasized the importance of diverse experience and the unique qualities of the GS community. Among the students inducted into the honor society this spring are 26 first-generation college students, 35 international students, 3 U.S. veterans and 5 students who served in the armed forces of other nations, and 15 students from the Dual Degree programs. “Before coming to GS, you have been street vendors, travel agents, English teachers, translators, actors and musicians, [...] baristas, line cooks, organic farmers, grassroots campaign coordinators, and pre-K music teachers. To me, this is the beauty of the GS experience.”
The chief aim of the GS Honor Society is to cultivate interaction among those committed to intellectual discovery and academic excellence. The only group of its kind at the University, the Society offers opportunities throughout the year for its student and alumni members to interact with one another, as well as with the faculty who enjoy working with such outstanding scholars.
