2013 Alumni Reunion Weekend and Dean’s Day

Recent alumni from all four schools boarded the USS Intrepid on Friday night for cocktails and dancing. Veterans were invited to come early for a champagne toast. On Saturday, all alumni returned to campus for a full day of events and activities. The Honorable Eric H. Holder Jr. ’73CC, ’76LAW was one of the featured speakers for this year’s Public Intellectual Lecture Series. Themed "The Wonders of Discovery," these lectures addressed the latest thought-provoking research and its impact on our historical perspectives. The afternoon lectures were each focused on a core curriculum class.

On Saturday afternoon the Dean’s Day Lunch was held at Faculty House. Joining the alumni were Deputy Vice President for Alumni Relations Louise Rosen and Dean of the School of General Studies Peter J. Awn. Richard Space ’05 welcomed guests and acknowledged the University officials who attended the lunch. Rosen and Awn then spoke about the impact the School of General Studies has on the student and alumni communities at Columbia University.

The day concluded with a reception honoring all Columbia veteran alumni. Professor Richard Betts, the Arnold A. Saltzman Professor of War and Peace Studies, led a brief program and shared the many connections between Columbia University and the US military.

On Sunday morning, alumni gathered in St. Paul’s Chapel to conclude the weekend by celebrating service to Columbia, community, and country. Alumni veterans Richard Space ’05 and Azar Boehm ’12 did readings, and Dean Awn made remarks about service within the alumni community.
