Religion, Public Health, and Supreme Court Changes during COVID-19

March 9, 2022

Online

Please join Christopher Riano '07GS, Lecturer in constitutional law and government at Columbia and President of the Center for Civic Education and Elizabeth Reiner Platt, Director of the Law, Rights, and Religion Project at Columbia Law School, for a discussion about religion, public health, and Supreme Court changes in the era of COVID-19.

The focus of this event is to help the Columbia-wide community better understand federal and state Constitutional rights, religious freedom exemptions, and the legal boundaries around mandatory vaccination and mask wearing requirements for public vs private entities. We're hoping that attendees will then be better equipped to have informed and factual discussions with their family, friends, colleagues, and communities both inside and outside of Columbia. The panelists will also discuss what they see lying ahead with a new Supreme Court justice, particularly when it comes to religion and public health.

Prior to the Center, Riano served as the assistant counsel to the governor of New York for education, arts, and constitutional law. Reiner Platt is the primary author of the LRRP's recent report We The People (of Faith), which argues that the Supreme Court’s COVID-era opinions have created a hierarchy of constitutional rights, with religious rights at the top.
