FLI at GS: FLI Alumni Panel & Social

The Dean of Students Office invites students who identify as first-generation and/or low-income (FLI) to a FLI Alumni Panel and Social. Attendees will hear from a panel of GS alumni as they share their experiences navigating academics as FLI students and transitioning to life in the workforce post-graduation. Following the panel discussion, students will have the opportunity to network with GS alumni.

Panelist Bios 

Ferdinando Castro Gonzalez '24GS | GSAA Recent Alumni Committee member

Ferdinando Castro Gonzalez was an international student from Venezuela and former professional athlete, Ferdinando’s journey has been shaped by resilience, service, and a commitment to equity. Growing up amid political unrest inspired his passion for civic engagement and advocacy—especially for underrepresented voices. At Columbia GS, he earned a degree in political science with honors and led efforts to build inclusive communities across campus. As Chapter President of the United Nations Association, he expanded membership fivefold and organized global dialogues with UN diplomats. He also co-founded the Venezuela Student Association, creating the first Ivy League conference for Venezuelan students to address humanitarian and economic challenges.

Pearl Sikepe ’25GS  | GSAA Recent Alumni Committee member

Pearl Sikepe was a first-generation student at Columbia University’s School of General Studies, majoring in Computer Science. Originally from South Africa, Pearl moved to California before settling in New York City to pursue her academic and professional aspirations. With a keen interest in data science and artificial intelligence, she is driven by a desire to harness technology for innovative solutions. As someone who values community and connection, Pearl takes pride in contributing to the diverse environments she’s a part of. Columbia GS has become a true home away from home, supporting her growth as both a student and a person.

Valerie Ramirez Mukherjee ‘99SIPA - Founder & Executive Chairwoman of MindStreet, Inc. 

Valerie “Val” Ramirez Mukherjee is a former Wall Street and Silicon Valley executive turned entrepreneur and investor. She currently runs her family’s investment office and foundation. She serves as the Executive Chairwoman of MindStreet, a digital mental-health startup and recently was a nominee for U.S. Congress. Ramirez Mukherjee is a first-generation college student with degrees from UC Berkeley (BA), Columbia University (MPA), and Wharton (MBA).
