When it comes to learning academic writing, three things are consistently true. First, academic essays follow a formula—there are unspoken rules about what makes a good argument that college writers are expected to know. Second, strictly formulaic writing can be unengaging, so instructors often encourage students to depart from it. Third, you have to master the formula before you can break it. Once taught these fundamentals, new writers can quickly become exceptional ones. Join us for a crash course in the basics of academic essay writing to prepare for your final assignments this semester if you haven't yet enrolled in University Writing.
