Can I Say That?  Why Free Speech Matters and How to Use It Fearlessly

Dr. Chloe Carmichael ‘06GS returns to Columbia to share insights from her new book, Can I Say That? Why Free Speech Matters and How to Use It Fearlessly. A clinical psychologist and USA Today bestselling author, Dr. Chloe reframes free speech not only as a civic value but as a foundation for mental health. Drawing on her clinical practice and research, she explains how open dialogue strengthens resilience, reduces anxiety, fosters authentic connection, and also stimulates cognitive growth and emotional regulation in a time when self-censorship and groupthink are on the rise.

In this special talk, Dr. Carmichael will share both knowledge and techniques from her new book—highlighting the cognitive and emotional benefits of open dialogue, unpacking common misconceptions about free speech, and offering guidance on how to speak up thoughtfully and listen resiliently when faced with differing opinions. Participants will gain not only practical tools for navigating sensitive topics with confidence and respect, but also a deeper understanding of why open dialogue matters for creating true safe spaces strong enough to hold a diversity of viewpoints. By cultivating authenticity in our conversations, we not only deepen mutual understanding but also push back against today’s epidemic of loneliness by increasing genuine social support and strengthening our sense of community.

A zoom link will be sent to registrants 2 hours before the event.
