Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (SAH) Outcomes Project, Critical Care Neurology, Columbia University Medical Center

Position Description
The Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (SAH) Outcomes Project is seeking applicants for their Student Research Internship Program. The project is an ongoing epidemiological study that has enrolled 700+ SAH patients over the last 8 years, uncovering data that helps address questions regarding SAH etiology and course, as well as evaluate the impact of existing and new therapeutics on outcome.

The Student Research Internship Program provides Columbia students with career development opportunities in medical research. Qualified students will be exposed to the basics of medical research through a series of training modules and gain hands-on experience working on current research studies within the Neurology Intensive Care Unit. All student researchers will be strongly encouraged to participate in the publication process and it is a realistic goal for every student to work towards shared authorship on a poster or paper for a peer-reviewed conference or journal. Advanced students will be encouraged to develop their own projects under the supervision and support of their mentor.

Responsibilities Include

  • Constructing a medical profile for each enrolled patient
  • Interviewing the patient or family about their past medical history
  • Documenting procedures, complications, radiology, and physiological status during a patient's hospital stay
  • Following up with patients at 3 and 12 months to assess their current level of functioning and quality-of-life

Time Commitment
Part-time, 8 hours per week, with a one year commitment.
