Position Description
The Mount Sinai Pediatric Obesity Program, which addresses the epidemic of childhood obesity and the metabolic health complications of excess adiposity, are seeking research assistants. Opportunities for research assistants span basic science, clinical research, and patient care. Clinical projects involve collection of genetic samples from patients, administration of questionnaires assessing nutrition, exercise, sleep, emotional wellness, and social determinants of health, such as food insecurity, database management, and statistical analyses.

Students shadow in their Healthy Lifestyle Clinic which provides multidisciplinary care that includes endocrinology, nutrition, exercise, and social work. Students will learn about lifestyle interventions, weight loss medications, and bariatric surgery. If interested, students can also observe laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy procedures with their pediatric surgeon. Laboratory projects involve working with mice that have genetic variants known to cause human obesity to seek genotype specific therapies for weight loss. 

Students will be assigned their own focused research project for which they will present as a first-author abstract at Mount Sinai Child Health Research Day. Students will report to Dr. Joan Han, clinic director and chief of the pediatric endocrinology division.

Time Commitment
Part-time, 4 hours/week, minimum one-year commitment
