Position Title
Part-time Volunteer Brain Bank Assistant
Position Description
The Neuropathology Brain Bank & Research CoRE at Mount Sinai, under the direction of Dr. John Crary, is seeking students to volunteer as Brain Bank Assistants as part of the Neuropathology Research Division Training Program (NeRD-TP).
Participants will receive training in methods used to diagnose and study neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), and COVID-19 related encephalopathy. Volunteers will gain exposure to neuropathology research, diagnostic techniques, and research design while working closely with physicians, neuropathologists, and research scientists.
Students who successfully complete the program after one academic year may have the opportunity to transition into paid research assistant roles.
Responsibilities include:
- Assisting physicians and laboratory staff with brain tissue dissections
- Supporting histological processing of specimens
- Assisting with daily operations of the brain bank
- Interfacing with neuropathologists and research scientists
- Presenting a neuropathology case work-up at the end of the academic year
- Contributing to ongoing research projects
Position Requirements
- Minimum 3.3 GPA (must be listed on CV)
- Current post-baccalaureate, master’s student, non-matriculated student, recent graduate, or career changer interested in healthcare or research
- Exposure to neuroscience, psychology, pathology, or related fields
- Previous laboratory experience strongly preferred
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated interest in healthcare or research careers (MD, PhD, NP, PA, etc.)
Time Commitment
Approximately 2 days per week
- One weekday (Mon–Thurs) for ~5 hours between 12–5 PM (flexible)
- Friday: 10 AM – 3 PM (mandatory)
- On-call one weekend per month
