Position Description
The Leon Root Motion Analysis Laboratory at Hospital for Special Surgery is seeking Research and Clinical Volunteers to support its clinical and research operations. This opportunity provides hands-on experience in biomechanics, motion analysis, and clinical movement science, as well as opportunities to shadow physical therapists, researchers, scientists, and surgeons. The position is particularly well suited for students interested in pre-med, pre-PT, biomechanics, or related fields.
Responsibilities include:
- Assisting clinicians and scientists with data collection during clinical and research sessions
- Preparing treatment areas, stocking supplies, and maintaining a clean clinical environment
- Preparing processed data for clinical treatment planning reports
- Assisting with data cleaning for research involving total knee replacement, knee osteoarthritis, foot and ankle, shoulder, and hand/wrist conditions
- Conducting literature reviews and background research for manuscripts and grant-related documents
Position Requirements
- Current undergraduate student or recent graduate; backgrounds in engineering, biology, kinesiology, physical therapy, neuroscience, computer science, or related fields preferred but not required
- Interest in biomechanics, motion analysis, or clinical movement science
- Comfort working with numerical data and willingness to learn data-processing software
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Detail-oriented and able to handle clinical data responsibly and confidentially
- Completion of required CITI, HIPAA, and HSS compliance training (may be completed during the position)
Time Commitment
Minimum of 5 hours per week for at least one semester
Compensation
Volunteer; lunch/coffee voucher provided for each day of participation
