Position Description
The Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital is seeking a full-time research assistant to support the Quality and Patient Safety program. The Quality and Patient Safety Data Coordinator will be instrumental in assisting their team with initiatives to measure quality and safety in orthopedic care. This will include collection, analysis, and report of outcomes and clinical performance data as well as initiatives to facilitate quality improvement projects in various Orthopedic specialties. The individual will report to the Quality and Patient Safety Chairs, Dr. Jon JP Warner and Dr. Kevin Raskin, and Dr. Laura Rossi, the Quality and Patient Safety Program Manager for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. This position is best suited for recent college graduates who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine, public health, or health policy.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Data collection and analysis
  • Providing support for quality measurement involving selected patient chart audits and/or data collection for ongoing department-wide initiatives
  • Creating and maintaining datasets for ongoing research and improvement initiatives
  • Identifying and confirming appropriate procedures to validate data and ensure data quality and integrity
  • Performing statistical analysis of data consistent with established methods for analyzing healthcare quality and patient safety data
  • Supporting and managing projects
  • Communicating with clinical staff to understand available quality and patient safety data in relation to orthopedic surgery and opportunities for improvement
  • Providing support in designing specific quality improvement projects and data analysis plans
  • Provide support in implementing and facilitating department-wide quality improvement projects
  • Interacting with division Quality and Patient Safety Chairs for all ten orthopedic surgery specialties
  • Assisting in grant, abstract, and manuscript preparation
  • Participating in team meetings pertaining to quality and patient safety
  • Assisting with meeting schedules, meeting minutes, and agendas as appropriate
  • Reviewing and following-up on safety reports including clinical shadowing to develop process maps and conduct root cause analyses
  • Other administrative duties as assigned

Time Commitment
Full-time, minimum one-year commitment, two-year commitment optional
