Tell us about your path to GS.

My journey to GS began amidst the challenges of the pandemic, where I immersed myself in various health-related roles, both as a volunteer and a professional. Before joining Columbia, I dedicated my time as a volunteer EMT in Manhattan, providing patient care within the bustling environment of Central Park and its surrounding areas. Additionally, I also took an AmeriCorps service year with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, where I was a project member in two distinct public health initiatives, each focused on raising awareness and educating communities about hypertension and colon cancer.

A third initiative which I worked on, and the highlight of my tenure at the Department of Health, was undoubtedly my involvement in the Covid-19 vaccination distribution effort. Serving as a vaccinator, I had the privilege of contributing directly to the collective effort to combat the pandemic, administering vaccines to hundreds of New Yorkers and playing my part in putting an end to the Covid crisis.

During the time leading up to my acceptance into GS, I worked diligently as an emergency room technician (ERT) at one of the nation's busiest emergency rooms. The fast-paced and dynamic environment of the ER exposed me to a myriad of unique and rewarding experiences, which nurtured my interests in and commitment to medicine. These experiences allowed me to exercise my skills and gain invaluable insights, cultivating my dream of making a meaningful difference in the lives and health of my patients.

What has been your proudest accomplishment at Columbia?

Having been able to successfully complete the rigorous coursework at Columbia while simultaneously maintaining full-time employment represents a significant personal achievement for me. Balancing the demands of academic studies with the responsibilities of a full-time job required a lot of dedication, time management, and a strong work ethic. Navigating these challenging two years while meeting professional commitments simultaneously tested my resilience and determination to excel.

What was a class that contributed the most to your Columbia experience?

One of the highlights of my time at Columbia was undoubtedly the Contemporary Biology Laboratory course. Despite the demanding post-lab assignments, I found the hands-on experience in the lab to be incredibly fulfilling and stimulating. Exploring cutting-edge technologies like gene editing and then putting them into practice was not only enjoyable but also highly educational. True to its name, this course provided me with a modern perspective on the field of biology, allowing me to delve into the latest advancements and deepen my understanding of the subject in an interactive environment.

What are your plans for after graduation?

After finishing this semester, I plan to take the MCAT and apply to medical school.

What advice would you give to a student who's about to start their GS journey?

For students embarking on their academic journey, I offer this advice: never lose sight of your goals. It's important that you remain determined and persevere, especially during challenging times. While the coursework may be rigorous and time-consuming, remember that the effort you put in brings you one step closer to achieving your ultimate objectives. Keep your aspirations in mind and let them serve as motivation to move you forward. By staying focused and disciplined, you will get through your journey and emerge smarter and stronger on the other side.
