Position Description
The Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI), a partnership between the University of California, Berkeley and the University of California, San Francisco, is seeking a Computational Staff Research Associate who will contribute to their commitment to excellence, diversity, and inclusion in academia. The IGI is also interested in individuals who may have had non-traditional career paths, taken time off for family/personal reasons, or excelled in careers outside academia.
Responsibilities include:
- Supporting Whole-Genome Sequencing (WGS) data analysis and molecular surveillance of SARS-CoV-2
- Executing bioinformatics pipelines for COVID WGS analysis and report results
- Organizing and managing large sets of sequencing data and review and submit genomic data to the relevant public genomic databases
- Updating data visualizations for genomic surveillance activities
- Working with epidemiologists to provide molecular epidemiology support for NGS surveillance activities for SARS-CoV-2
Position Requirements
- Bachelor’s in a related field or equivalent training/experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s in biology, bioinformatics, computer science, or genetics, microbiology, molecular biology with programming experience a plus
- Experience working in a UNIX/LINUX server environment
- Experience writing shell scripts or willingness to learn
- Experience with at least one scripting/programming language (e.g., Python, Perl, R, C++, Java) and willingness to learn new languages, if necessary
- Experience with or knowledge of submitting genomic data to NCBI databases a plus
- Familiarity with Auger, NextStrain and SARS-CoV-2 web applications (e.g. UShER) a plus
- Experience with GitHub, AWS or other cloud platform a plus
- Knowledge of basic statistics a plus
