Position Description
The Bouvier Lab at ISMMS is seeking a research associate (laboratory technician) in a laboratory studying the virology, immunology, and transmission of respiratory viruses in animal models.
Responsibilities include:
- Conducting a variety of experiments following established protocols, such as tissue culture, virus isolation from clinical samples, stock virus growth and preparation, molecular cloning, DNA isolation and purification, electrophoresis, and other laboratory techniques
- Learning and implementing biosafety level 2 (BSL 2) standard operating procedures to perform and assist with experiments using influenza viruses
- Learning and implementing biosafety level 3 (BSL3) standard operating procedures to assist with experiments using SARS-CoV-2
- Performing hands-on experiments with virus-infected laboratory animals, including virus inoculation, blood collection, and nasal wash sample collection, in a consistently humane and ethical manner
- Recording experiment results accurately and completely and report them to the principal investigator
- Assisting with routine lab maintenance, including preparation of reagents and media, stocking and ordering of supplies, and basic maintenance of laboratory space and equipment
- Performing other laboratory duties as needed
Position Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree in biology, microbiology, or a related field; current pursuit of a pre-medical curriculum during or after a bachelor’s program is a suitable equivalent
- Some educational or employment experience in a microbiology, virology, biology, chemistry, or similar laboratory
- Intelligence, ambition, and enthusiasm for science, ideally including a desire to pursue graduate medical or scientific studies
- Preferably, a commitment of 1.5 years prior to pursuing a graduate degree
Time Commitment
Part-time or Full-time, to be discussed/negotiated (minimum 15-20 hours per week)
