Full-time, Paid, Research Technician, Cancer Research

Position Description
Dr. Marcel van den Brink's laboratory at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is seeking a student to work as a research technician. The research technician will perform research activities in collaboration with internal/external personnel to complete science-based projects. 

Responsibilities Include

  • Mouse husbandry and colony management, including obtaining biopsies and genotyping animals by PCR or Southern blot hybridization
  • Organizing the lab including coordinating orders, unpacking consumables, organizing plasmid/cell/animal stocks, cleaning communal areas, preparing, standard solutions for the laboratory, organizing lab personnel and lab space
  • Preparing laboratory equipment, instruments, solutions, stains, assays and other supplies as instructed for research experiments
  • Working on culture and/or cell separation methods; electrophoretic separations: assays (e.g., RIA, TIA, ELISA); basic biology or other specialized science techniques depending on the lab
  • Operating lab equipment such as centrifuges, pH meters, analytical balancers, scintillation counters, spectrophotometers, light microscopes and other equipment as instructed
  • Handling animals including injection of animals, collection/harvesting of tissues, fluids; animal autopsies in order to make chemical identification and conduct analyses
  • Responding to and completing tasks as instructed by the P.I. and staff associated with designated research projects by carrying out the requested activities
  • Providing assistance with other on-going research for peers and research personnel in the laboratory by completing tasks related to the projects within the deadline specified
  • Performing necessary analysis and calculations, recording data and writing reports on research findings
  • Responding to and producing reports comprising of the requested statistics for the study as requested by the laboratory head and members of the research team
  • Purchasing equipment and materials for the laboratory
  • Assisting the Administrative Assistant in generation of purchase order information for supplies and equipment by gathering information for online purchase 

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Sciences with relevant laboratory experience
  • Basic molecular biology procedures such as cloning and DNA/RNA and tissue culture procedures, extractions from bacteria and tissues
  • Animal handling skills
  • Exceptional organizational skills
  • Good manual dexterity 
  • Must have no issues working on mice or mousing handling
  • Must be an effective communicator, capable of determining how best to reach different audiences and executing communications based on that understanding
  • Must be adept at planning and prioritizing work to meet commitments with a keen eye for detail
  • Must be action oriented and eager to take on new opportunities and tough challenges with a sense of urgency, high energy, and enthusiasm 

Time Commitment
Full-time, with a minimum commitment of two years.
