Position Description
Dr. Jensen Henry and Dr. Constantine Demetracopoulos, orthopedic surgeons at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, are looking to hire a research assistant to join their team for a one-year position in the field of foot and ankle reconstruction and ankle replacement.

The research assistant will be an integral part of a team of orthopaedic surgeons and engineers with a specialized interest in ankle replacement and reconstruction. This position includes the responsibility of building and maintaining their total ankle replacement database, interfacing with patients who are part of ongoing studies, and playing a key role in data collection for clinical and biomechanical research. There will be opportunities to shadow orthopaedic surgeons, participate in weekly didactic conferences and teaching sessions with attendings, residents, and fellows, and attend/present at national meetings.

Responsibilities include:

  • Identify, screen, recruit, obtain consent, and coordinate follow-up for patients for participation in research studies
  • Lead coordination and follow-up with patients in person or via mail, phone, and email
  • Prepare and submit study-related materials and updates on research progress for Institutional Review Board (IRB) regulatory approvals and departmental meetings
  • Regularly report on progress towards milestones
  • Design/maintain/organize databases, data collection forms, source documents, patient files, and documents related to study projects
  • Assist in grant documents/submissions
  • Manage and assist with data collection for research studies, including: clinical data from chart review, radiographic measurements, biomechanics laboratory studies, retrieved implant analysis, and gait simulator studies
  • Prepare and submit abstracts, manuscripts, and presentations for regional, national, and international conferences where research is presented

Position Requirements

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree (undergraduate science courses or pre-medical focus is recommended but not required)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Interest in orthopaedic research
  • Excellent skills in interpersonal communication, time management, and organization
  • Experience with clinical, translational, or bench research; scientific reference managers; or statistics is beneficial, but not mandatory
  • Medical students taking a gap year may also apply

Full-time (June 5, 2023 - June 30, 2024*)
