Campus Safety & Security

At Columbia, the safety and well-being of students, faculty, and staff is an important priority. Columbia's campuses and their environs are safe and have a relatively low crime rate for an urban university.

The University is required by federal law to publish an annual security report containing information with respect to campus security policies and statistics on the incidence of certain crimes on and around our campuses. This information is available in FACETS, the University student handbook; at the website for the United States Department of Education; or by requesting a copy of the report from Campus Crime Report, Department of Public Safety, Columbia University, 111 Low Library, Mail Code 4301, 535 West 116th Street, New York, NY 10027 or on the Public Safety website.

EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION
For campus Public Safety emergencies, call 212-854-5555 or dial 99 from any Rolm phone. Emergency call boxes located throughout campus and surrounding areas will immediately put you in contact with Public Safety's 24 hour operation center. The boxes are easily identifiable by a light blue light attached to the unit. When off campus, dial 911 for emergency services.

PUBLIC SAFETY RESOURCES
Students should exercise caution when traveling late at night and utilize Columbia's public safety escorts by calling 212-854-SAFE [7233]. This free service is available from West 108th Street to West 110th Street between Amsterdam Avenue and Riverside Drive, and from West 111th Street to West 122nd Street between Morningside Drive and Riverside Drive. For more information, visit http://www.columbia.edu/hr/wacguide/safety/public-escorts/index.html.

Limited shuttle service is available to students via the Morningside Heights evening shuttle. For a map of the bus route and pick-up times, vist http://www.columbia.edu/cu/transportation/docs/shuttles/morningside-evening.html.

65 neighborhood merchants participate in Operation Safe Haven. The presence of a red lion sticker in a storefront indicates that this store is a refuge available to individuals who feel threatened. Participating merchants will contact Public Safety and/or the NYPD for an immediate response.

Additional information on campus safety, including an extensive list of crime tips, is available on the Public Safety website.
