Drawing

Course fee: $35. Workshop limited to 20 students. A course in the fundamentals of visual vocabulary. Students work from observation using still-life objects and the human figure. Drawing is perceived as a process of transformation; the edge of an object can become a line in a drawing. A shadow is a mass that becomes a form and begets another form (negative space). The relationship of lines and forms to each other and to the picture format is emphasized. Material used: vine charcoal, compressed charcoal, pencil, pen, ink, and brushes. Class assignments are accompanied by discussions and critiques. Portfolio required at the end.

Examines the potential of drawing as an expressive tool elaborating on the concepts and techniques presented in Drawing I. Studio practice emphasizes individual attitudes towards drawing while acquiring knowledge and skills from historical and cultural precedents.

R3021x-R3022y. Figure drawing, I and II. 3 pts. Instructor and hours to be announced. Prerequisite: R1001. Fee: $35. An exploration, through direct observation and perceptual analysis of the figure, of a wide range of drawing experiences.

R3650x or y. Narrative illustration. 3 pts. I nstructors and hours to be announced. Fee: $35. Prerequisite: R1001. Limited to 20 students. An intensive introduction to the making of sequential, narrative art. The history, practice and theory of narrative illustration will be explored culminating in a book project which is written. Portfolio required at end.

Painting

Extension of R3201, with greater emphasis on notions of meaning and context in work as well as more speculative aspects of image making and structure. Individual and group critiques. R3210x or y. Figure painting. 3 pts. Instructor and hours to be announced. Limited to 18 students. Prerequisites: R1001 and R3021. Fee: $45. Course provides the experience of employing a wide range of figurative applications which will serve as useful tools for the contemporary artist.

R3600x or y. Materials and techniques. 3 pts. Instructors and hours to be announced. Limited to 18 students. Fee: $45. Prerequisite: R1001. An intensive introduction to the use of a variety of two-dimensional mediums and techniques. Students are encouraged to pursue independent research. Portfolio and reference paper required at end.

R4101x or y. Painting, III. 3 pts. A. Rand. Hours to be arranged. Limited to 18 students. Prerequisites: R1001, R3201, and R3202. Fee: $45. An advanced painting course which explores issues in contemporary painting and provides exposure to the most recent theoretical and technical applications of painting. Investigations into subject, scale and materials will be encouraged. Portfolio and term paper required at end.

Sculpture

Covers the basics of designing and making three-dimensional space and form. Students are asked to develop imaginative and creative solutions to a series of structured problems.

R3330x or y. Sculpture, I. 3 pts. J. Kessler, Th 10-4. Fee: $75. Prerequisite: R1315. Fundamentals of sculpture are investigated through a series of conceptual and technical problems. A variety of materials and techniques are introduced, including wood, metal, plastic, fabric, clay, and mixed media. Group critiques, discussions, and field trips accompany class assignments.

R3331x or y. Sculpture, II. 3 pts. J. Kessler, F 10-4. Fee: $75. Prerequisite: R1315 and R3300. Limited to 15. Continuation of R3330, presenting the student with more advanced conceptual and technical approaches to sculpture. New materials are introduced.

Continuation of R3331, allowing students to work independently on a series of sculptural projects. Students propose and initiate a term-long project. Completion of project, readings, and artist statement required.

Printmaking

R3401x or y. Printmaking, I: intaglio. 3 pts. T. Vu-Daniel. TuTh 1-4. Fee:$70. Building on the fundamentals and techniques learned in Lithography I, the student develops more involvement with stone and plate lithography. Introduction of color lithography and photo lithography will be introduced. Class projects are accompanied with discussion and critiques. Portfolio will be required at the end.

Encourages the student to think visually more in the character of the medium, and personal development is stressed. Individual and group critiques. Portfolio required at the end.

R3411x or y. Printmaking, I: relief. 3 pts. G. Amenoff. W 1-7. Fee: $70. Introduces woodcut and other relief techniques. Given the direct quality of the process, the class focuses on the student's personal vision through experimentation with this print medium. Individual and group critiques. Portfolio required at end.

R3412x or y. Printmaking, II: relief. 3 pts. G. Amenoff. W 1-7. Fee: $70. Prerequisites: R1001, R1003 and R3411. Continues instruction and demonstration of further techniques in woodcut. Encourages the student to think visually more in the character of the medium, and personal development is stressed. Individual and group critiques. Portfolio is required at end.

R3415x or y. Advanced printmaking. 3 pts. T. Vu-Daniel. Fee: $70. Prerequisites: R3040, R3401 or R3411. Class is designed for students who have already taken one semester of a printmaking course and are interested in continuing on an upper level. Students will be encouraged to work in all areas, separate or combined, using their own vocabulary and imagery to create a body of work by the end of the semester.

Photography

Fee: $65. An introduction to photographic tools, techniques and the language of photo criticism. Work includes camera operations and black-and-white darkroom work, 8x10 print production and critiques of the students' work.

R4701x or y. Photo II. 3 pts. T. Roma. TuTh 1-4. Prerequisite: R3701. Primarily a critique class for students with a working knowledge of the black-and-white darkroom. Although there will be occasional individual assignments, students are encouraged to pursue self-generated projects.

R4702y. Digital documentary photography. 3 pts. T. Roma. Hours to be arranged. Prerequisite: R3701. The goal of the course is the creation of a small-scale documentary project using the Internet as an end source for photographs and writing. Students will use school-supplied digital cameras, computers, and a web site.

R4710x or y. Contributing faculty photography seminar. 3 pts. T. Roma. Hours to be arranged. Students will be exposed to a variety of approaches and viewpoints in contemporary photography through meetings with photographers, curators, critics, etc. Preparatory readings and final paper required.

Digital Media
R3508x or y. The Digital image. 3 pts.
J. Kelly. Hours to be arranged. For visual arts majors only. This workshop serves to deliver the skills and understanding necessary for artists to incorporate the use of digital imagery into their work. Students will learn how images are represented digitally, and how digital images are created, manipulated, and displayed (both electronically and via translation back into material form). Emphasis will be placed on the creative and aesthetic possibilities of the digital image.

The student is required to produce a significant body of work in which the ideas, method of investigation, and execution are determined by the student. A plan is developed in consultation with the faculty. Seminars; presentations. At the end an exhibition or other public venue is presented for evaluation. Studio space is provided.

A second opinion is provided to the senior students regarding the development of their senior project. Critics consist of distinguished visitors and faculty. Issues regarding the premise, methodology, or presentation of the student's ideas are discussed and evaluated on an ongoing basis.

R4601y. Eye and idea. 3 pts. Hours to be arranged. Limited to 30 students. Prerequisite: permission of the chair. New York City is the most abundant visual arts resource in the world. This class visits museums, galleries, and studios on a weekly basis. Students encounter a broad cross section of art and are encouraged to develop ideas about what is seen. The seminar is led by a practicing artist and utilizes this perspective.

R4603x or y. Colloquium. 3 pts. Hours to be arranged. Prerequisite: permission of the chair. For visual arts majors and concentrations only. Critical issues in art are presented by theoreticians and practioners. Background knowledge of 20th century art history is recommended.

An examination of special topics in visual arts and related disciplines. Maybe repeated for credit provided topic changes.
