Institutional aid is awarded and administered by the School of General Studies. All prospective and current students are eligible to apply for a GS scholarship regardless of enrollment status (part- or full-time) or academic history.
The Director of Educational Financing at the School of General Studies is available to counsel admitted students on both short- and long-term financial goals. As there are many options to consider, a personalized plan is usually created to meet each student's specific situation.
GENERAL STUDIES
SCHOLARSHIPS
General
Studies scholarships are based on academic progress and financial need. Scholarships
are available to full- and part-time students and do not have to be repaid.
Funding is limited and students must apply by the deadline each year to be
given priority consideration.
Continuing Students
The priority deadline for continuing students is April 15.
Although funds will be limited, students may apply late even if they have missed the April 15th priority deadline.
New Students
New students should observe the June 1st (Fall) and November 1st (Spring)
priority deadlines, which coincide with respective admission application deadlines.
POLICIES
GOVERNING GENERAL STUDIES SCHOLARSHIPS
The School
of General Studies provides scholarships to undergraduate degree candidates.
Scholarships range from $500 to $18,000 and are awarded to students with demonstrated
academic achievement and are influenced by financial need. Eligibility for General
Studies scholarships requires at least half-time enrollment (6 credits). General
Studies scholarships are normally only available for the fall and spring semesters
and are not available for summer enrollment. Scholarships are available to new
students, and in general, the level of support increases as students progress
in their degree programs. Continuing General Studies students in Columbia University-sponsored
study abroad programs may have their scholarships credited to their University
student accounts. Students are advised to contact the Director of Educational
Financing before beginning their studies abroad.
Scholarships are not generally available to tuition-exempt students or to those who take more than 124 credits to complete their degree. (This can include students who belatedly change their major and must exceed 124 credits for completion.)
All scholarship recipients must submit an application to be considered for the next academic year. The GS scholarship application is an online application and must be completed by the appropriate deadline.
The Scholarship Committee meets annually to review applications and award scholarships for the following academic year. Application results are mailed to all applicants.
NAMED
